Captain Kirk actor will go to space.
Actor William Shatner, who played the iconic spacefarer Captain Kirk on the show “Star Trek,” will head into space in a few days. “Yes, it’s true; I’m going to be a ‘rocket man!'” he announced on Twitter. The 90-year old will board a Blue Origin New Shepard suborbital spacecraft scheduled to launch on Oct. 12.

Russian film crew arrives at the space station.
On Tuesday (Oct, 5), a Russian film crew launched up to the International Space Station. The team will film scenes for a film called “The Challenge” over the course of 12 days. Russian actress Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko flew up to the station alongside veteran cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov and their trip lasted four hours.

NASA’s DART mission will crash a high-speed spacecraft into an asteroid for science.
On Nov. 23, NASA will send a spacecraft on a collision course with an asteroid. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) may help NASA and other space agencies learn how to successfully divert dangerous asteroids that would otherwise impact Earth. DART will use a kinetic impactor technique to see if it can change the path of the asteroid.

Old rocket part was confused for a gamma-ray burst.
Polish scientists came to the conclusion that a signal initially thought to have been a gamma-ray burst was actually just a piece of space junk. Gamma-ray bursts are extremely rare, and it turns out the flash in question, which was made by a telescope in Hawaii in 2017, was the leftover Breeze-M upper stage from a Russian Proton rocket.

Climate change research awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics.
On Tuesday (Oct. 5), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the three winners of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics. Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi received the award for their work that modeled the complex physical systems that fluctuate and ultimately impact Earth’s climate. Their work allowed later scientists to make connections between increased atmospheric temperatures and the emissions from human activity.

New ‘Arids’ shower appears over the Southern Hemisphere.
Over the last two weeks, a new meteor shower has been detected in the extreme latitudes of Earth’s Southern Hemisphere. Radar instruments in New Zealand, Chile and Argentina have observed the tiny and faint meteors from the newly-dubbed “Arids” meteor shower as they enter the planet’s atmosphere. The sand-sized meteors are the dust left behind by Comet 15P/Finlay, which is so small that its location in the solar system can change.

A strange and rare object resembles an asteroid and a comet.
In a new paper, scientists describe an solar system object that has the characteristics of both an asteroid and a comet. Researchers have noticed that object 2005 QN173 sheds dust in a long thin tail, like a comet. However, it is orbiting the sun in a path usually taken by asteroids. Comets come from the outermost regions of the solar system and shed their frigid outer shells on their long elliptical trips around the sun. This object only takes 5 years to go around the sun and travels along the outer portion of the asteroid belt.

First mission to the lunar far side of the moon surpasses 1,000 days on the moon.
On Sept. 28, China’s Chang’e 4 lander and its Yutu 2 rover achieved a milestone of 1,000 days on the moon. The mission reached the farside of Earth’s natural satellite on Jan. 2, 2019. Youtube has since then covered a total of 2,754 feet (839.37 meters) of lunar ground and acquired 3,632.01 gigabytes of data during its driving, according to Chinese officials.

BepiColombo performs an incredible flyby of Mercury.
The European and Japanese BepiColombo spacecraft zoomed past Mercury on Oct. 1 and took its first close-up images of the planet. The flyby produced the closest-ever measurements of Mercury’s magnetic field above the planet’s southern hemisphere. The mission will perform five more flybys before it enters into an orbit around Mercury in 2025.

A rare planet may be orbiting three stars.
A star system called GW Orionis (or GW Ori) is home to three stars. In a rare twist, a planet might actually be orbiting the three stars simultaneously. GW Ori is located about 1,300 light-years from Earth in the constellation Orion. Researchers got a close look at the system using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope in Chile.
